Carved Stone Lettering Techniques

The traditional hand-carved (incised) V-cut lettering is beautiful and considered the most elegant option. The letters would not normally be colored, however, they can be if desired.

Sandblasted lettering, a classic and elegant method, is also deeply recessed into the stone and can be filled with gold leaf or exterior paints.

Secretariat

541 V-grooved letters (double-sided), finished with gold leaf were hand-carved into Indian Black Granite for the base of the Secretariat sculpture at the Belmont, New York Racetrack. The Secretariat sculpture resides in the paddock in honor of the 1973 Triple Crown winner. The bronze Secretariat sculpture is by John Skeaping.
